What is Shimenawa?

Shimenawa are sacred ropes that represent a boundary line which separates a realm of divinity from one of impurity and which signify a barrier to ward against evil spirits. ONOMICHIYA baja sur proposes Shimenawa for creating your personal “sacred” space at your home. Today our life can be overwhelming, overflowing with information and pressured from daily responsibilities. It is easy to lose sight of our “true” selves. We need time to relax our body and listen to our heart, and make a space so that we feel safe to accept ourselves without judgement. Shimenawa is an invitation, the sign. - when you cross this boundary, you may turn your thoughts inward, and give yourself permission to let go for a moment of meditation. This awareness may become a sacred daily ritual to be in the present moment.

Both the hemp & the straw Shimenawa are woven by Mr. Masahiko Yamakawa, a 5th generation master of the craft at Kyoto Yamakawa. Kyoto Yamakawa specialized in hand-crafted ceremonial items for shrines and temples since 1886.

The Hemp Shimenawa

A hand woven Shimenawa with ceremonial grade pure HEMP (Tochigi Shiro) cultivated in Tochigi, Japan.

原材料は神事用などに特別に都道府県知事から許可を得て栃木県で栽培された国産麻「精麻」(品種:とちぎしろ)を使用し、職人が一つ一つ手編みで仕上げています。
